A PUTT ABOVE Featured in the Ottawa Citizen

Where mini golf gets a whole new dimension

Black-light links and 'Balladium' make a fun outing in Bells Corners

WHAT'S SO SPECIAL ABOUT THE PLACE?

It's Ottawa's only 3-D blacklight 18-hole mini golf course with three glow-in-the-dark themes: pirate ship, jungle and underwater. When you wear the 3-D glasses, the wall murals, zany patterned carpet and neon-coloured faux brick curbs by each hole take on a whole different dimension.

IS IT SCARY?

Not scary, but it does have a dizzying effect, especially when you're trying to putt a little golf ball through a shark's mouth or under a giant gorilla into a hole at the far end of the course. It can make it difficult to focus. You likely won't make it through all 18 holes with the glasses on.

ARE THE GLASSES MANDATORY?

No, they're optional and the place is cool even without them. But with the shades on, you'll spot creatures lurking under leafy trees, floating along the ceiling and springing off the walls that you wouldn't see without them.

IS THERE JUST MINI PUTT?

No. The 9,000-square-foot entertainment centre also includes a mini arcade ($1 to $2 per game) and what they call a Balladium, which is another colourful room with 10 air cannons to blast balls at targets high on the wall or at the opposing team.

SOUNDS DANGEROUS. Absolutely not. The balls are made of soft foam and you're given plastic safety glasses to wear. The objective is to fire the balls at the wall targets to see how many points you can rack up on the digital scoreboard. The team that scores the most points in five minutes, wins. Truth be told, we had more fun firing rounds at each other.

Are there age restrictions?

Golfers can be as young as five. It really depends on the child and your patience level. On a recent visit, we saw other families with young kids, teens and grandparents playing. It really does appeal to all ages.

What should I wear?

White so you glow under the black lights. Short sleeves are a good idea too, especially in the Balladium because blasting sponge balls at walls and family members is sweaty work. Also they ask that you wear clean indoor shoes or socks. No bare feet.

How much does it cost?

General admission is $10.50 for adults, $9.50 for youth (five to 12), $8.50 for seniors. The 3-D glasses cost $3 a pair (I recommend only buying a couple pairs and taking turns) and admission to the Balladium is $4 for five minutes. There are also combo packages starting at $12.50 a person that include glow bracelets that you can keep.

DO I HAVE TO CALL AHEAD TO MAKE A RESERVATION?

Only if you want to book a birthday party, team outing or corporate event. Otherwise, you can just drop in to play.

IS THERE SOMEWHERE TO GET A BITE TO EAT?

At the check-in counter, they sell cereal bars for $1, mini bags of candy for $2.25 and canned drinks for $1.50. But if you want a meal, Bells Corners has plenty of fastfood and family restaurants, including Pizza Hut -always a kid favourite -conveniently located at the far end of the mall.

WHEN IS IT OPEN?

Until the end of June, Monday to Thursday, 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday, 1 p.m. to midnight; Saturday, 10 a.m. to midnight; Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Summer hours are posted on the website: www. aputtabove.ca

WHERE CAN I FIND THE PLACE?

It's at 3825 Richmond Rd. at Robertson Road. For more information, call 613-695-8100 or go to the website.
